Does anyone know of a breakdown in a good boom?

I'm looking to buy one, but I've heard people say it is not worth the money and to just go biscuit buying a hair. They say they do not fall fast enough and have problems in cold weather or wet conditions. I currently use a hostage of rest and I'm tired of the brushes wear out, so that's why I'm looking into this. Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.
